When a person dies without a Will, their estate will be distributed according to a set of rules known collectively as the Intestacy Rules.
Under these rules, the deceased surviving spouse or civil partner is entitled to a sum of money from the estate; this is known as a statutory legacy for partners.
Assuming the estate carries sufficient funds, then currently the amount awarded is £250,000.
From 06 February 2020 this will be raised to £270,000.
